HC allows Batukamma fete on Tank Bund

Directing the Hyderabad police to take necessary measures, the Andhra Pradesh High Court today allowed the Batukamma festivities to be celebrated on the Tank Bund on October 23. However, the court asked the organizers to celebrate the festivities only between 5 pm and 10 pm on October 23.

As the Hyderabad police refused permission for the festivities on the Tank Bund mentioning traffic and law and order problems, activists of the Telangana Jagruthi have moved the High Court. The organizers argued before the court that Batukamma festival is part of the Telangana customs and tradition and thus they should be allowed to organize the festivities on the Tank Bund.

Agreeing with the argument, the court today allowed the festivities but with certain conditions. The organizers should celebrate the festival on the Tank Bund only between 5 pm and 10 pm on October 23, the court said. It, however, directed the police to take all possible steps to regulate the traffic and also to maintain the law and order in the city. The police also were directed to provide necessary security for the smooth conduct of the festival on the Tank bund.
