Happy Birthday, Sharmila, a woman of grit and determination
Today is the birthday of Sharmila, daughter of YS Rajasekhara Reddy and sister of YSR Congress Party president, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. On the occasion, family, friends and hundreds of well wishers conveyed their regards and greetings.
Sharmila became a household name in Andhra and national politics after she undertook 'Maro Praja Prastanam Padayatra'on October 18, 2012 to mobilise support for YSR Congress Party.
The padyatra catapulted her to fame as she became the first woman to cover more than 3,000 kms on foot. She began her padayatra from Idupulapaya in Kadapa district and covered 2,250 villages in 116 Assembly constitutions in 14 districts in 230 days.
For someone not used to the rigours of politics, Sharmila endured the 'padyatra' without hesitation. She roughed it out daily for 230 days, defying rains, heat and dust of the parched Rayalaseema region. She continued on her journey that was marked with the barest of facilities and comforts—be it food or shelter. (Read here)
During the journey, she patiently listened to the problems faced by people of the areas she visited, thereby touching many hearts.
Here's wishing Sharmila a very happy birthday!
