Happy birthday, Jagan: The great son of Andhra Pradesh
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is a man of many parts. A young politician, a grieving son, a crusader, a common man seeking to correct the injustice meted out to his home. But most importantly, he is the leader, people of Andhra Pradesh have been seeking for a long time.
The 41-year-old knew and nurtured only one ambition since his childhood, to help people. He wanted to enter politics not for the fame or glamour, but to toil for the betterment of his people. And he didn't have to look far for a role model. Born to former CM YS Rajashekara Reddy, Jagan knew who he had to emulate to make a place in the hearts of Telugu people.
And make place he did. Since coming onto the national consciousness in 2009, Jagan has only grown from strength to strength. He has proved time and again, that here is a leader who would fight for the truth no matter how hard the fight is going to be.
In 2010, Jagan floated his own party YSR Congress Party in defiance of Congress and in respect of his father, the late YS Rajashekara Reddy.
Will fight for Samaikyandhra till the end: Jagan
'Samaikyandhra' in one word is Jagan's motto. It is his battle cry and his plea to keep Andhra, the only place he calls home, united.
Transparency has never been a politician's forte, but Jagan has always maintained a single stand on the issue of state bifurcation. He decided that irrespective of the support or brick backs he will get, he will stand for 'Samaikyandhra'.
In a bid to defeat divisive politics and politicians indulging in the same, Jagan toured the nation to gain support for his cause. He met Kolkata Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal, Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa, Shiv Sena head Udhav Thackeray, Former PM HD Deve Gowda, among others.
To everyone he met, without airs or pride, he sought support to keep his home united. He stressed the need to amend article 3 of the constitution that gives power to the Centre to divide any state without a resolution. He urged the national leaders to understand that the division of AP would lead to a dangerous precedent.
In spite of being a lone crusader he did not cower, but stood strong in front Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on the issue of bifurcation. It wouldn't be wrong to say that the two year old YSRCP took on the 128 year grand old party.
He even took his fight to the epicenter of Indian politics, the Parliament and protested in front of the speaker, not fearing any political wrath. Despite repeated warnings by doctors, he undertook fasts to protest against the state division.
People's leader:
While standing for Samaikyandhra, Jagan did not forget his duties as a true grassroots leader. When Coastal Andhra was ravaged by Cyclone Phailin and Helen, Jagan took time out to meet those affected by the cyclone.
He also undertook 'Odarpu yatra" to meet the families of those who commit suicide, and died of shock after the death of YSR. Their loss he could understand only too well.
He also undertook several dharnas to create awareness among the ruling classes about people's problems. Staging dharnas on farmer compensation and student Fee Reimbursement, is the norm for Jagan.
Jagan's humility is well known, after all, he had once famously declared, "Jagan is nobody. I am an ordinary man and I just have three MPs. But I will fight till the end to stop the bifurcation."
Here's wishing the leader, a very happy birthday!
