Hyderabad: It was like a hit-and-run; heavy gales and hailstorm lashed the city at midnight on Wednesday throwing Hyderabad into darkness throughout the night. Some areas received heavy rains while others were thrown out of gear with trees being uprooted disrupting traffic movement.

The rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning left the city in darkness as power was tripped in several areas. Water supply was also affected due to power shut down. Several hoarding fell to the ground.

Banjara Hills, Begumpet, HiTec City, Malkajgiri, Ameerpet, Nampally, Dilsukhnagar, Kukatpally, and several other areas of the city were among the affected areas. Nellore, Krishna, Guntur and other places also received heavy rains.

Indian Meteorological Department director YK Reddy said that the thunderstorm with rain and hails spread all over city will continue for a day. The reason for the rains was trough which seen extending from the North Vidarbha region in Maharashtra to South Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Rayalaseema.

As these are pre-monsoon rains, the spread and duration of the rains will be limited and will cover a smaller area lasting for an hour or so, according the weather officials.
