'Farmers committing suicides even during festival season'

“It is very sad to see that suicides of farmers are continuing in Telangana even now,” said senior Telangana Congress leaders Ponnala Lakshmaiah and K.Jana Reddy.

Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad on Thursday, they said, “Due to non-availability of loans and due to power cuts, the crops have been damaged extensively. As a result, more than 200 farmers have committed suicides in the state till now.”

The leaders said that it was very pathetic that the farmers committed suicides even during festival season.

They demanded that the government give a clarity on loan waiver. “New loans are not being given to the farmers even when 25 per cent of the loan amount was already paid. As loan waiver is delayed, the farmers are losing the chance of availing the benefits of crop insurance,” said the Congress leaders.
