their numbers is a relatively recent development. These providers include Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar who are offering many exclusive series and movies. Netflix and Prime are even producing content in the regional languages to draw the attention of viewers in the tier 2 cities and towns.
Another factor which led all these providers to increase their viewer base at such a pace is the availability affordable internet data. The other competitor Amazon Prime has grown to 10.8% in Oct compared to 4% in January, Jio Cinema 25%, Sony Liv 6.7% from 3.9%. Star led Hot star has seen a dip of 6% that is 36% in Jan to 30.4% in October.
Netflix is charging Rs 800 for their single user account and Rs 500 for the multiple user account every month. Rest all are charging less than that as their subscription fee, but Netflix is being preferred for its content, which seems to be appreciated by the watchers. Narcos is one of the popular shows on Netflix.
Many seasoned producers and directors from the entertainment industry are looking at this model for creating content customised to specific audiences. All the movies earlier branded as art house or only multiplex types are now being made and garnering good reviews. For instance, Anurag Kashyap made Sacred Games a Netflix original.
Popular actors from the Indian film industry are interested in working in such series. Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddque, Radhika Apte were seen in Sacred Games. There is always scope for unconventional content in such spaces making them stand out from the big ticket box office movies and daily soaps.
