Fanaa Nizaami Kanpuri (1922-88)Mirza Nisar Ali Beg adopted the poetic name of 'Fanaa' and was popular at Mushairas all over the country for his lilting style of recitation or tarannum. Fanaa like Khumar Barabankvi and Shamim Jaipuri was a poet of the Ghazal form cast in the classical mould. He would touch upon contemporary matters obliquely, using classical metaphors and figures of expression as when he says:
is tarah rahbar ne looTa kaarwaan
ai 'Fanaa' rahzan ko bhi sadmaa hua
(O 'Fanaa', even the highway robber was dumbstruck at the way the guide/leader looted the caravan)Fanaa stuck to simplicity of expression in his Ghazals. Here's another example of the directness which marks his style:
jhooTi hi tasalli ho kuch dil tau bahal jaaye
dhundhli hi sahi lekin ik sham'a tau jal jaaye
