Chanting of mantras and religious hymns are a common sight during Maha Shivaratri or the 'The Night of The Shiva' where devouts offer special prayers to Lord Shiva. The poojas is meant to "remove darkness and ignorance" from life. While there are several theories concerning dos and don’ts on Mahashivratri, one should be cautious about what not to do on Shivaratri day and night.

1. Pooja Timing

As per pandits, the Chaturdashi Tithi this year begins at 4.28 pm and ends at 7.07 am (March 5)

2. Avoid Black

It is said that Lord Shiva doesn't like the colour black, so devotees must avoid this colour particularly on Maha Shivaratri.

3. Avoid Few Things

Lord Shiva, though he likes white flowers, flower 'kethiki' being white is not offered to Shiva. Secondly, water from the shell should not be offered while performing pooja, Sesame and Tulsi should also be avoided. The vital 'bilva patra' should be used in full and damaged or withered leaves should be avoided.
