DRI Busts Gold Smuggling Racket in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a gold smuggling racket by arresting a train passenger and seizing 2,494.97 grams of gold biscuits worth Rs 76.59 lakh from his possession in Odisha.

The team intercepted a passenger travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in the Santragachi-Chennai Super Fast Express train at Khurda Road Railway Station and seized 15 gold biscuits which he had hidden in the pockets of his inner vest and shoes.

The gold biscuits bear the markings of Myanmar.

"Based on specific intelligence, officers of the DRI, Bhubaneswar intercepted a passenger travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in SRC MAS SF Special Train at Khurda Road Railway Station, Odisha on Sunday around 8:50 p.m," said a release from the Bhubaneswar-based Hyderabad Zonal Unit of the DRI.

The person smuggling the gold was arrested under the Customs Act 1962, stated a press note.
