Doctor Tests Medicine on Self, Dies after Being in Coma for 9 Years

Kochi:  Dr PA Baiju, an ayurvedic doctor, who has been in coma for over nine years after he tested a medicine that he prescribed for a patient on himself and became comatose.

Dr Baiju used to be a popular Ayurvedic doctor in Paipra village near Kochi of Kerala. In 2007, he prescribed ‘kashaayam’ (medical concoction/syrup) to a woman, who approached him seeking treatment for some orthopaedic problem. However, the woman came back to him with several complications and complained that this could be due to the medicine prescribed.

Contending that the medicine was harmless and effective, the doctor consumed the medicine. Immediately he collapsed and lapsed into coma. This incident occurred in 2007 and since then Baiju was comatose. The end came on Monday night.
