New Delhi: At least 45 trains from Delhi were delayed, four rescheduled and thee cancelled on Monday morning due to heavy fog which caused poor visibility. Several parts of Northern India, including Delhi-NCR, witness foggy mornings every year during winters. Poor visibility on an express highway resulted in pile-up crash of over 30 vehicles recently and the foggy mornings severely affect the movement of trains and flight operations.

On Saturday, at least 33 trains were delayed, five rescheduled and three cancelled in Delhi on due to fog and operational reasons.

The pollution levels in New Delhi were rising again owing to falling temperature and low wind speeds. The pollution level in Delhi is going to worsen in the coming days. On Wednesday, Delhi witnessed a foggy morning with the minimum temperature dipping to 11 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average resulting in delay of 30 trains, rescheduling and cancellation of other trains due to poor visibility.

The air pollution level peaked in Delhi-NCR breaching the 'severe' level as per the Air Quality Index (AQI) for the past few weeks. A thick smog had engulfed the city prompting Delhi government and the NGT to announce several measures to clean national capital's air. The smog was a result of low temperatures, stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab, and heavy vehicular pollution. The government earlier introduced odd-even system to allow only one portion cars on roads. The scheme could not be continued and the plans were dropped this time.
