DA Case: ACB Grills Goa Opposition Leader Chandrakant Kavlekar

Chandrakant Kavlekar - Sakshi Post

Panaji: Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Chandrakant Kavlekar on Friday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Goa Police, in connection with a disproportionate assets (DA) case filed last year against him and his wife Savitri.

Kavlekar had earlier dodged police summons on February 5. Before entering the Crime Branch premises near the state capital, Kavlekar said he was cooperating with the investigation and maintained he was innocent. "I have always said the charges against me are false but I will cooperate with the investigation to the fullest," Kavlekar said.

The Congress leader was summoned to appear before the ACB on Monday (February 5) but he skipped the summons, claiming he was busy with chores related to the upcoming session of Goa legislative assembly. Kavlekar has already secured interim relief from a local trial court, which bars police from arresting him till February 12.

The FIR filed against Kavlekar and his wife Savitri accuses them of purchasing properties in Kerala between January 2007 and April 2013, during which Kavlekar held the post of chairman of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation on three occasions.

Kavlekar has been accused by the Goa Small Industries Association of committing large-scale irregularities, mostly related to allotment of industrial plots, when he was chairman of the Corporation.(IANS)
