Gold Worth Rs. 2.24 Crore Recovered From Air India Flight Toilet
CHENNAI: Seizing gold by customs officials in Airports across India is not new and it is almost a routine for them everyday. To escape from their eyes, some passengers adopt 'novel' methods to smuggle the precious gold in different kinds. One of such incidents took place in Chennai International Airport where the customs officials have seized 5.6 kg gold bars worth Rs. 2.24 crore, hidden in the toilet of an Air India Aircraft.
The customs officers who received information from the trusted sources over the smuggling of gold in a plane from Dubai carried out search operations in the plane at Chennai airport, which was scheduled to fly to New Delhi. They found four black color packets which contains 48 gold bars weighing 5.6 kg and officers estimated that the worth of the precious metal would be around Rs. 2.24 crore.
The Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport, said that they have started further investigation in this case. However, the flight which reached from Dubai to Chennai, changed its service number and left for Delhi after the incident.
