Dalits Beaten To Death For Open Defacation
Shivpuri: Two Dalit kids were allegedly beaten to death for defacating in the open in front of a Panchayat building in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.
According to the police, the two were identified as Roshan Balmiki, 12, and Avinash Balmiki, 10. The two accused, Hakim Yadav and his brother Rameshwar Yadav attacked the children when they were defecating on a street in front of panchayat building at around 6.30 am, the police said.
The father of the deceased boy, Manoj Balmiki alleged that they were also facing discrimination over their caste in Bhavkedhi village where the incident took place.
He also claimed that they were allowed to draw water from the village hand-pump only after all the other residents were done collecting water. "I had a heated argument with the accused two years ago and they abused me over caste lines and threatened to kill me. They wanted me to work for them as a labourer for a meagre sum," he said to the daily.
According to police reports, the two accused have been arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section for murder and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
"According to the investigations so far, there are only two accused", Sirsod police station's inspector RS Dhakad said to the daily.
"The Congress and BJP governments should explain why proper toilet facilities have not been provided in the houses of poor Dalits and backward communities? If the truth is very bitter then those who beat the Dalits to death for being forced to defecate in the open should be hanged," Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati tweeted in Hindi slamming both BJP and Congress governments in Madhya Pradesh.
