College Gangrape Video Creates Social Media Storm, Police Swing To Action
Hyderabad: Five people were arrested in Dakshin Kannada when police sprung into action and approached a girl to file a complaint against the accused who had sexually assaulted her and put up the gangrape video on social media.
The video of the 19-year-old girl was circulating on social media over the past few weeks. On being flagged, police zeroed in Dakshin Kannada as the crime of the incident. Dakshin Kannada police filed a suo motu case and also alerted the cyber cell.
A special team was formed to nab the culprits. Police then approached the girl to file a complaint who followed suit.
Police said that the girl and the four suspects were studying in the same college. The incident happened in February or March this year when the teenager was alleged drugged and later gang-raped by four men. The victim had not filed a complaint in fear.
Meanwhile, police has asked not to further circulate the video on social media as it will be an offence under the law.
In a press release, the district police wrote, "We request members of public to not transmit the referred videos over social media or save the referred videos on their phones/computers, and doing so is an offence under Section 354C of the IPC and 66E, 66A of IT Act and the persons (including group admins) will be made the accused under the said sections."
