Two killed in road mishap in Ballia
Ballia (UP):Two youths were killed and three others injured when two motorcycles collided near Lakhnapar village under Sikanderpur police station area here, officials said Saturday.
The accident took place late Friday night, killing Arvind Pandey (28) and Manjit Rajbhar (23) on the spot, police said.
Three others were injured in the mishap and have been admitted to a hospital, police added. PTI
Fire engulfs migrant center in Bosnia, injuring 32
Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina): A fire on Saturday engulfed a migrant center in northwestern Bosnia, injuring 32 people, police said.
The blaze erupted early in the morning in the center in Velika Kladusa, which hosts some 500 migrants stuck in the Balkan country while trying to move toward Western Europe.
The blaze likely started accidently from a cooking device, said local police spokesman Ale Siljdedic.
It spread swiftly, sending the migrants fleeing the building, with some jumping through the windows, Siljdedic told The Associated Press.
Thirteen migrants remain hospitalized with injuries such as burns or fractures, he said. The fire was put out after several hours.
Several thousand migrants fleeing war and poverty in their countries have been passing through Bosnia toward the West. They mostly flock to the northwest that borders European Union member Croatia. (AP)
Man kills wife, child before killing himself in Jhajjar
Jhajjar :A 35-year-old man allegedly shot his wife and four-year-old daughter to death before killing himself at Ladpur village here, police said Saturday.
The bodies of Dinesh Kumar, his wife and daughter were found by Kumar's brother when he went to their home on Saturday morning, police said.
A handwritten note, purportedly by Kumar, was recovered from the house where in he take responsibility for the deaths, they said.
Officials said Kumar, a security guard, used his licensed revolver for the killings, officials said.
"The matter is under investigation," said Jhajjar Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar. The bodies were sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.
It is being explored as to why Kumar took the extreme step, officials said. PTI
At least 11 dead, six wounded after shooting in Virginia: police
Washington: A gunman went on a shooting spree at a government building complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia, killing 11 people and wounding six, police said.
The gunman, a longtime public utilities employee, was also killed after trading fire with responding officers, police chief James Cervera told a news conference on Friday.
The shooting happened just after 4 pm (local time), when the gunman entered one of the buildings at the Virginia Beach municipal complex and "immediately began to indiscriminately fire on all of the victims," Cervera said.
The wounded included a police officer, who was saved by his bulletproof vest.
The building where the shooting took place in Virginia Beach, a city on the east coast of the US about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of Washington, housed the city's public works and utilities offices. (AFP)
Cong MLA, Panaji Mayor among 3 booked for molesting woman
Panaji, Jun 1 (PTI) Newly-elected Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserratte of the Congress and city Mayor Uday Madkaikar are among three persons booked by the police for allegedly molesting a woman during an anti-encroachment drive, police said on Saturday.
The Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) has undertaken a drive to clear encroachments of off-shore casinos anchored in the river Mandovi.
One of the off-shore casinos had allegedly encroached on a footpath and workers of the civic body had gone to the spot Friday to clear it. Monserratte, Madkaikar and former Panaji Mayor Yatin Parekh were accompanying them.
The complainant woman, who was part of the group which opposed the demolition of a staircase constructed by the off- shore casino operator, alleged that Monserratte, Madkaikar and Parekh touched her inappropriately, abused her and outraged her modesty, police said.
"In her complaint lodged late last night, the woman also alleged that all the accused threatened to kill her," Panaji police sub inspector Arun Abhay Gawas Desai said.
Based on her complaint, the trio was booked under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), for outraging modesty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), police said.
When contacted, Monserratte claimed that no such incident has happened.
He said that he was present at the site only to oversee the demolition work being conducted by the civic body.
"None of the persons named in the complaint were involved in any such action of outraging modesty," he saiid.(PTI)
