Hyderabad: A 21-year-old student from Moula Ali was arrested by the police on Monday for attempting to kill his cousin by setting her on fire.

The accused, Kranthi Kumar is pursuing B.Tech final-year at a college in Ghatkesar. For the last one year, he has been stalking his cousin, who is pursuing her graduation at a private college in Kushaiguda.

While Kranthi Kumar even proposed marriage to her, the harassment increased after she refused to marry him. Upon complaining to her parents, they warned him to stay away. Nevertheless, the accused continued to stalk her.

On her way to the college on April 13, Kranthi Kumar met her at Vasanta Vihar Colony and asked to accompany him on his bike. However, when she refused, he poured a bottle of petrol on her and attempted to set her ablaze. Hearing the girl's screams, the locals nearby rescued her and thwarted his attempt. Amidst this, Kranthi absconded from the spot.

Based on the complaint filed by the girl, a case was registered and the accused was arrested on Monday. He has also been produced before a court and sent for judicial remand.
