Hyderabad: A 25-year-old woman committed suicide on Saturday evening over dowry harassment she faced from her in-laws.

The incident took place in KPHB colony in Hyderabad. According to the details, the woman, identified as Medishetty Dhanalaxmi (25), got married to D Krishna Rao, a recording assistant at the Deputy Inspector of school in Punjagutta in April 2018.

The police revealed that the victim's family had given Rs 10 lakh cash, an acre of land and 40 tolas of gold ornaments when the couple got married.

However, Rao began harassing her for money to run the household expenses which resulted in many arguments. Dhanalaxmi's relatives complained that her husband used to come home in a drunken state and harass her physically and mentally demanding money from her parents.

Both the families got involved and made attempts to solve the issues after Dhanalaxmi returned to her parents’ house in West Godavari. Krishna Rao even assured to take care of his wife and brought her back to Hyderabad. The victim, on the other hand, was unable to deal with the harassment from her husband and hanged herself from the ceiling fan with a saree on Saturday.

Before taking the extreme step, Dhanalaxmi sent a text message to her family members sharing details of the harassment.

A case was registered against Krishna and his family members based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family.
