Madurai: Denying a paltry amount of Rs. 500 demanded by her husband cost wife her life.  Ramar (70) was living in Yelumalai near Osilimpatti in Madurai District. His wife Rasammalla alias Rasathi (65) was working as daily wage labourer in Kerala and would come home once a month. On the occasion of Sankranti, the Tamil Nadu Government gave all the poor people Rs 1000 and this was given through the ration shops. Rasathi came to take the money and Ramar demanded that she give him half the amount i.e. Rs 500. She refused to give him the money and this led to a quarrel between the two of them the entire night.

In the early hours of Saturday at around 4 am, Ramar cut Rasathi's throat while she was sleeping which killed her on the spot. Ramar went to the Yelumalai police station and surrendered. Police said that since his wife stayed away from him he got into bad habits and started taking money from local people. The police took him into custody and sent the body for post mortem to Osilimpatti government hospital.
