Committee To Take Action On Homam Performed At Gandhi Hospital

‘Mruthyunjaya Homam’ was performed by the doctors to avoid untimely death at Gandhi Hospital - Sakshi Post

Hyderabad: A day after the Mruthyunjaya Homam performed by doctors in Gandhi Hospital on Monday, the state government on Tuesday sternly reacted over the incident and appointed a five-member committee to look into the ridiculous act.

Based on the committee decision, the government will take action on the doctors who encouraged the ritual in the hospital. 'Mruthyunjaya Homam', a Vedic ritual was performed by the doctors to avoid untimely death at Gandhi Hospital as infant-mother deaths in the ward are bringing a bad name to the hospital in the recent past.

"There is no permission to conduct such kind of performances in the hospital," the hospital superintendent Sravan Kumar said. On the other hand the head of the Gynecology department, Dr Anupama told the media that they had informed the hospital management about the Homam. She also said that the expenses for the ritual were paid by the hospital doctors.

The 'homam' lasted for four hours and was conducted by four priests, in which several professors and students also participated.

However, the Telangana State Convenor of Jana Vignana Vedika termed the act as illogical. He said that the doctors have the responsibility to promote scientific temperament instead they have chosen to promote blind faith.
