Centre Says Reorganisation of Constituencies Not Possible
The Centre has once again categorically stated that there was no possibility of increasing the number of assembly constituencies in both the Telugu states.
In a reply to the queries raised in Lok Sabha by MPs Dr Boora Narsaiah Goud and Kotha Manohar Reddy, Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said that the Telangana Government wanted the present 119 seats to 153 and the Andhra Pradesh Government wanted the seats to be raised from 175 to 225. The Centre has referred the matter to the Attorny General, who in turn said that as per the Article 170 (3) of the Constitution, the organisation of the Assembly constituencies is not possible till 2026.
He said the number of seats can be hiked only when the Section 26 of the Article 170 is amended.
