Centre Keen on Solar-powered Charkhas
Thane (Maharashtra): Union Ministry for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is exploring the possibility of using solar power for operating charkha in the textile industry. The efforts of the ministry are on to develop a technology that will enable operation of charkha with the help of solar energy.
Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of State for MSME said: “Developing technology operating solar-powered charkas is in progress,” while addressing a meeting at Thane Small Scale Industries Association (TSSIA) here on Wednesday.

Even now a lot of yarn is spun using charkhas and the cloth is exported to various countries. MSMEs have a major contribution towards country’s economy as they generate more employment in lesser investment.
Singh said charkha has attained extreme importance in Khadi industries and it is being extensively used.
