Calf rescued from irrigation well

Tirupati: A ten-month-old elephant calf was on Sunday rescued from a 25-feet deep dried irrigation well at Chikkapalli village, 120 km from Tirupati.

Forest officials said the calf, which had come with a herd of 12 elephants, accidentally fell into the irrigation well in the wee hours.

The herd gathered around the well and trumpeted for some time and left after damaging the crops nearby.

Police and forest department officials used an earth mover to facilitate the rescue after three hours. A slope was created inside the well and the calf climbed up and ran towards the forests.

Forest officials said the calf reunited with the herd later.
