Both houses of Parliament adjourned Sine die

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die on Thursday wiping out the entire session due to protests by the opposition, led by Congress, over the Lalit Modi controversy and Vyapam recruitment scam.

The session at the lower house  which began on July 21 was a complete washout due to protests by the opposition, chiefly the Congress, demanding the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for allegedly helping former IPL chief Lalit Modi and the Vyapam scam.

Members of the Congress party were absent on Thursday when Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the house sine die.

Chairman M. Hamid Ansari too adjourned the upper house of parliament sine die when it met at noon after the first adjournment.

Earlier, the house bid farewell to three of its members, who are going to retire.

Congress member from Puducherry, P. Kannan, will retire on October 6, while two nominated members, Ashok. S. Ganguli and H.K. Dua's term will end on November 17.

Ansari said: "They significantly contributed to its deliberations and enhanced its dignity. I wish them good health, happiness and success in their future endeavours."

H.K. Dua commented on the functioning of the house and said: "Tolerance has been missing in the house. I urge the treasury and opposition benches to evolve a consensus on running parliament smoothly."
