Pune: A young software engineer from Kolkata was stabbed to death by a youth on Friday night barely 500 metres from her office in Pune. The assailant chased her with a knife after a heated argument and hit her on the head and neck, a motorcyclist who witnessed the attack told police.

Antara Das, 23, was a resident of Sarsuna in Behala and worked for Capgemini. Her father, Debananda Das, reached Pune by a late evening flight on Saturday.

Antara was attacked on a footpath in Talawade, about 22km from here, around 8.35pm when the street lights were off. She ran towards people screaming "Bachao, Bachao" and collided with the motorcyclist, Satyandra Krushnanand Sinha (36), who was on his way home. Sinha took the help of a passing vehicle and rushed her to a private hospital, but doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Sinha later lodged a complaint with the police. He told the cops that the assailant was wearing a T-shirt with black and blue stripes. The police are yet to identify the attacker.

Dehu Road police said Antara stayed as a paying guest and usually took a bus home. On Friday night, she was walking to a friend's place nearby. She left office at 8.25pm and started walking towards KNB Chowk when she was attacked. She suffered serious injuries on her head and nape of the neck.

SP (Pune rural) Jay Jadhav and other senior officers rushed to the spot after the attack. Police found Antara's Kolkata address from documents inside her purse. They contacted her parents based on the details found in her identity card.

This is the fifth incident of a woman techie being killed in Pune by known or unknown assailants. In one of the earlier cases, the assailants are yet to be brought to book.
