APSRTC strike hits public transport in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: The bus services were hit in the city today as employees of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation went on a strike demanding a pay hike. Employees of APSRTC have called on a state-wide strike today demanding for a hike in salary, corporation sources said.

Over 1,000 buses at ten depots across the district remained confined to their depots, affecting scores of commuters. APSRTC, Regional Manager Y Jagadish Babu said efforts are on to run the hired buses through contract drivers and conductors. Out of total 1,030 corporation buses in the district, 150 are hired buses.

He said corporation was able to sent out 75 hired buses to various destinations from here today and is making all efforts to run buses with private drivers and conductors. Meanwhile, district police made necessary security arrangements at all depots in view of the strike. The situation is peaceful and no untoward incidents have been reported so far, police said.
