National Handloom Day 2019: AP CM YS Jagan Allocates Rs 200 Crore For Weavers

Amaravati: On the occasion of National Handloom Day which is observed on August 7th , Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy hailed the weavers of the State. He said that the handloom industry was a reflection of our society and an inherent part of our culture. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in his message, reminded that the credit of the Swadeshi Movement which unified the nation during the freedom struggle goes solely to the weavers of the country.

The AP government sought to allocate Rs 200 crore from the Budget , for reviving the handloom sector in the State and as an honour to the handloom weavers.

Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Buggana Rajendranath Reddy who presented the YSRCP government's maiden Budget in the Legislative Assembly last month had allotted Rs. 200 crore for welfare of weavers and the Handloom industry.This was also in fulfillment of the promise made by YS Jagan during his Praja Sankalpa Yatra when he saw the weavers plight in the state.

National Handloom Day highlight India's handloom industry and seeks to focus on the contribution of handloom to the socio economic development of the country and also increase the income of weavers.

The Union Government had declared August 7 as the National Handloom Day in July 2015 with the objective of generating awareness about the importance of the handloom industry to the socio economic development of the country.

The August 7 date was chosen as the National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this day in 1905 in Calcutta Town Hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British Government.

The movement had aimed at reviving domestic products and production processes.

As part of this the National Handloom Day will be observed at Weavers' Service Centres in different states across the country.
