Tension Grips Tadipatri Steel Plant After Gas Leak Deaths

Tadipatri, Anantapur: Tension began to build here following the poisonous gas leak in Gerdau steel factory which led to the deaths of six persons. YSR Congress Party led by Tadipatri constituency coordinator, Pedda Reddy, staged a strong protest, along with leaders from Left parties, seeking justice for victims of the tragedy. Tension built up police tried to block the protest.

The YSRCP leader demanded ex-gratia amount of Rs. 50 lakhs to the families of victims, agricultural land to the extent of 5 acres and a job for each household. He expressed his outrage at the fact that the company's management demonstrated apathy because of the support of TDP leaders. It was trying to give a token amount as ex-gratia and wash its hands off the matter, he said. He criticized the management for not providing basic equipment and facilities to the workers, such as masks. The YSRCP leader slammed the management for not responding after nearly an entire day from the time of the accident.

YSRCP leaders alleged that the management enjoyed the support of JC brothers and that the company was passing on a monthly graft to them. They accused the JC brothers of remaining silent on account of this, and demanded an immediate response from them.

Police tried to obstruct the protest being staged by the YSRCP and Left parties' leaders and workers and forcibly shifted them to the police station. YSRCP leaders strongly condemned the undemocratic arrests by the police.

S.P. Anantapur, Aishwarya Rastogi said that a case had been registered under section 304 against Gerdau steel factory.
