YS Jagan-KCR Friendship A Game-changer For Telugu States

Turning a new leaf in the history of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, chief ministers of both the states, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and K Chandrashekar Rao stepped forward to resolve several pending issues from the time of bifurcation of the state in 2014. Most importantly, the two chief ministers came to an understanding on the need for utilisation of water from the two perennial rivers of Godavari and Krishna. This marks a new chapter in the history of both the states from the time of division. It must be pointed out that since 2014, relations between both the Telugu speaking states were less than cordial on account of the rigid stand adopted by former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. After the notes for votes case broke out, Chandrababu left Hyderabad in a hurry shifting his capital to Amaravati, from then on the trust deficit between the two governments only widened. Problems with respect to the utilisation of electricity apart from river waters remained unresolved.

Similarly, the subject of division of government employees had been hanging fire. To make matters worse, Chandrababu Naidu, in addition to his constant criticism of KCR and TRS, tied up with the Congress for the state assembly elections in Telangana held in December 2018. The campaigning on both sides was bitter and punctuated by sharp barbs and taunts. The situation continued till the Lok Sabha elections. In the interim period, the data theft case also proved to be a thorn in Chandrababu's side after the Madhapur police registered a case against IT Grids for the theft of personal information of millions of citizens of both states.
Over the last one year, Chandrababu was battling imaginary demons created in his mind in the form of PM Modi, KCR and YS Jagan and tried to attribute all his failures to them. At the government level, the relations between both states had hit an all-time low, while there was no rift of any kind between the people. It was only after YS Jagan became chief minister that both the CMs reached out to each other in a spirit of camaraderie and warmth. The bonhomie between KCR and YS Jagan was evident from the start and this has given a fresh impetus to the development story of both states.
While Chandrababu Naidu has had an adversial relationship with the Centre, especially from the time that the TDP walked out of NDA, YS Jagan in contrast, has been on cordial terms with all national parties including the BJP.
At the same time, the YSRCP did not compromise on its neutrality. It is YS Jagan's ability to reach out to the Centre and explain the situation that AP is going through which made the Modi government take decisions like taking over the Polavaram project as a national one. With his sober approach to presenting the problems of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan stands out as a statesman-like figure with exemplary qualities of leadership.
