Rupee gains 23 paise against US dollar

Mumbai: The Indian currency Rupee ran up 23 paise to 67.72 against the US dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) on Tuesday early trading. Exporters and banks have stepped up US dollar sale amid higher opening in the domestic equity market. Besides, weakness in the US dollar against some other currencies overseas gave the rupee some muscle, forex dealers said. Yesterday, the rupee had closed steady at 67.95 per dollar on alternate bouts of selling and buying of the greenback amid persistent concerns over the UK leaving the European Union.
Meanwhile,
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set rupee reference rate at 67.8867
against US dollar and 75.0623 for the euro. These rates were 67.9000
and 74.8801 respectively, Monday. According to an RBI statement, the
exchange rates for the pound and the yen against the rupee were
quoted at 90.1739 and 66.69 per 100 yens, respectively, based on
reference rates for the dollar and cross-currency quotes at noon. The
SDR-rupee figure will be based on this rate, the statement added.
