48th IFFI Kicks Off Amid Controversy

The 48th IFFI, which kicks off on November 20 in Panaji, will screen 10 world premieres, 10 Asian and international premieres and over 64 Indian premieres as part of the official programme

Panaji: India's largest film event, International Film Festival of India gets underway on Monday, with over 195 films from 82 countries scheduled for screening over 10 days, even as the controversy surrounding the dropping of two films "Nude" and "S. Durga" from the screening schedule continues.

The 48th IFFI, which kicks off on November 20 in Panaji, will screen 10 world premieres, 10 Asian and international premieres and over 64 Indian premieres as part of the official programme. It will open with noted Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi's movie "Beyond the Clouds", the organisers said.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will inaugurate the festival on November 20, while renowned actress Sridevi will inaugurate the Indian Panorama section. India's top actor through decades, Amitabh Bachchan will be awarded with the Indian Film Personality of the Year award, while the Lifetime Achievement award will be presented to the celebrated Canadian director, Atom Egoyan. The focus country in this edition of the festival is Canada and curated cinema from the North American country will be screened in the presence of leading Canadian actors and film personalities.

This edition of the Festival, will also be presenting films from a record number of women filmmakers in addition to a carefully curated section of restored classics from across the globe, which includes the recently completed restorations of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and Tarkovsky's "Sacrifice" among some other notable films.

"The International Competition section of IFFI 2017, which carries a cumulative cash prize of over Rs. 1 Crore will showcase 15 of the finest films of this year, competing for the Golden and Silver Peacock awards," the organisers said, adding that the International Competition jury will be headed by renowned filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, along with Maxine Williamson from Australia, Actor-Director Tzahi Grad from Israel, Russian Cinematographer Vladislav Opelyants, Director and Production Designer Roger Christian from the United Kingdom.

The IFFI this year will also pay its homage to cinematic master spy James Bond, in a special section where nine films featuring the various leading actors who have essayed the iconic character, will be screened. Filmmakers including Atom Egoyam, Shekhar Kapur, Nitesh Tiwari and Farah Khan, as well as Oscar winning sound designer Craig Mann, will be conducting master classes and panel discussions during the event.

Woman Killed in Uri during Pakistan Firing Overnight, Multiple Others Injured.

A woman was killed and four other civilians were injured in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district as the Pakistan army intensified artillery fire across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, officials said, adding that a large number of houses have also been damaged in the cross-border shelling.

Reports state that a Pakistani shell struck the vehicle the woman was traveling in, resulting in her death. The woman was identified as Nargis Bashir, and some of her family members had boarded a vehicle to flee from the Razarwani village in Uri that was hit by the mortar and artillery shells from Pakistan.

Delhi Tests Air Raid Sirens as Part of Mock Drill

In an attempt to educate and make people aware about the consequences of war amid Pakistan's continuous firing in the border states, the Delhi government did a mock drill to test air raid sirens installed at the Public Works Department (PWD) at ITO and asked people to not react out of panic. 

District Magistrate (Central) G. Sudhakar also urged people to remain calm and not be alarmed when they hear the sirens.

At least twice, sirens sounded during the drill, which started at 3 pm.

PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said 40-50 more such sirens will be installed across the national capital, each of which will cover an area of 8 km.

Pakistan Claims Economic Affairs Social Media Accout Hacked

Pakistan has claimed that its Economic Affairs Division account on social media has been hacked and called the post where it appealed for more loans from the international community owing to losses from Operation Sindoor "fake." 

In a post on X, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fact Checker shared a picture of the post and mentioned that it was "fake." Additionally, it asserted that the account had undergone hacking.

A missile-like object is found deep inside the Dal Lake after loud explosions were heard on Saturday morning in Srinagar, which is a major tourist attraction. The defense ministry also confirms that Pakistan has intruded into Srinagar's airspace in a press release.

India Pakistan War Live! Kashmir Loses Electricity in Various Parts

Since the early hours of Saturday morning (10th May), Srinagar has been rocked with multiple explosions, and now electricity is taken off in various places across Kashmir. The reason for this is yet to be determined, as reports indicate multiple places in Kashmir have lost power. The Indian Army released a statement after the press briefing, where they mentioned that they have attacked and neutralized multiple terrorist launchpads in a coordinated fire assault, razing them to cinders.
