The 45-hour-long massive operation to rescue four-year-old Girija ended in tragedy with rescuers confirming the girl's death. She was trapped 45-foot deep in the open borewell from Sunday morning.

At around 11: 30 A.M on Tuesday, the worst fears of the rescue team were confirmed after they finally managed to reach the spot where Girija  was trapped. Earlier in the day, members of the rescue team as well as district joint collector M V Reddy had hinted that the chances of the girl's survival appeared slim. The rescue operation were hampered by the presence of hard rocks and were driven only by hope. Joint collector finally confirmed the death of the girl and added that the body will recovered in an hour.

The news came as huge shock to the family of Girija and villagers of  Manchala who had been waiting with bated breath since Sunday morning hoping to see rescuers pull the child out alive.

Girija accidentally fell inside the open borewell while playing when her grandparents were working in the field. Oxygen was also supplied inside the hole. A camera was also put inside to locate her, officials said. Police and revenue officials, besides teams of NDRF, fire, geologists and coal mining company Singareni Collieries were involved in the rescue operations. The borewell is nearly 300-feet deep, police said.
