Seven members of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) were killed in an encounter with the C-60 (Maharashtra police’s special anti-Maoist unit) in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on Wednesday morning. The dead Maoists included five women. Some weapons were also recovered from the spot of the encounter.
“As per our information, an encounter took place between the C-60 and the Maoists near Kalled village, 15km north of Zinganoor police station in Sironch tehsil of Gadchiroli at around 7 am today. Seven dead bodies of uniformed Maoists were recovered from the spot of the encounter,” an official informed.
Gadchiroli, a tribal dominated district bordering Chhattisgarh, has seen a spurt in the Maoist activities this year after a lull for two years.
Three civilians and two CRPF men were killed by the Maoists in last two weeks in the district after which senior police officials, including an Additional Director General of Maharashtra Police, had been camping in Gadchiroli for over a week now.
